Notes on School to Business Meeting, April 16, 2005
Attendees - Mr. Gerritt (and an intern), Mr. Balcome, Ms. Booth (and an intern), FBLA ( Mrs. Grimm-teacher, Jason Peterson, Kayla Scheider -students), Career Center representative, Adult Ed personnel, various representatives from businesses, Gary Rushin from the Rotary, Rick Risley
Topics Covered
- Deborah Maccarone is currently pursuing a grant to pay for a qualified professional to work 15 hrs. per week. This person will be connected with the Career Center and help with speakers, job shadowing, etc.
- The Adult Ed. Program already has classes to teach interviewing skills, how to create a resume, etc. They would be willing to teach a class during or after school.
- Class Speakers - The Rotary Club has a list of speakers. Rick Risley also has a list of speakers. Deborah Maccarone will be working with both of these people to come up with one list. Guidelines and standards for the speakers need to be setup and someone needs to coordinate it.
- FBLA - The Future Business Leaders of America Club is working to be more active. Thoughts include a job board, helping with interviewing skills and student resumes, etc.
- Rotary Club - This group is very willing to participate. It has a list of professionals willing to have students do job shadowing with them. However, job shadowing needs a set of procedures so students can apply. It also needs someone to coordinate this program. The Rotary can also sponsor 1-2 students per year to attend leadership conferences. Again, someone working at the school needs to coordinate this.
Overall Impressions - It’s a great group. As with most volunteer organizations it could use more long term volunteers (without Rick Risley I’m not sure there would be a group) and more people in the school to coordinate the effort.
