Coordination Team - MINUTES, January 6, 2006
Objective was to create agenda items for remaining RHS Parent Group Meetings 2005/2006 school year and review progress to date.
In attendance: Brian Levesque - RHS Principal, Kim Marinan- RHS Guidance Director, Vicky Rispoli, Pegi Deitz-Shea, Jeff Carlson, Mary Carlson, Kate Cocco
Minutes: 1) 8th Grade Orientation Packets- items need to be submitted to Brian Levesque asap for printing and then collate and place in blue folder last week in January. Items to be included: Welcome Letter - Pegi - does it just need to be redated? School Profile - Brian RHS sample transcript - Brian RHS Parent Group Sign Up Form - Pegi - does it just need to be redated? RHS Project Graduation Sign Up/Informational Sheet "possible RHS Academic/Activities Resume" - not sure for this year's Packet - Kim Marinan researching RHS Map - Pegi does the original need any changes? Glossary, FAQ's - Jeff is updating Kim Marinan stated to wait until exams are over and Brian is going to have kids collate packets during study halls. Vicky Rispoli offered to help organize folder information with the student volunteers on the day of the compiling. 2) RHS Graduation Review Team - Brian is discussing with housemasters and then at that time it will be explored if parent can also participate on the team. Current answer to parent involvement for review team is no. 3) RHS Parent Group extended an offer for the group to present at upcoming RHS Staff meeting to build partnership between staff and parents. Update to staff on current RHS parent group activities. Current answer to parent involvement at this level is no. 4) RHS Scholarship Process - Ms. Booth (RHS Guidance Counselor) invited a team of RHS parents to assist with developing ways to streamline the scholarship process in January "05". A letter was developed to mail out to scholarship sponsors to encourage sponsors to use the common application. This procedure was developed as an avenue to ensure that there would be a more equitable distribution of scholarship monies for ALL students. Ms. Booth is retiring mid year "06" and again the scholarship process will remain the same so that the new RHS guidance director, Ms. Marinan has time to review the current process. To date Ms. Marinan is unaware of the letter developed in "05". Additional RHS parent input not requested. 5) Brian Levesque will explore an appropriate date for the RHS parent group to facilitate the staff appreciation goodies in the lounge..I believe last year it was before exams. 6) Committee Opportunities - Comparison of committee involvement for parents in "05/06" is considerably less than in "04/05". 7) Data Discussion - Data comparison between Spring 2005 study and current data shared this year is incomparable due to the following: -The spring 2005 study encompassed a wide ranging study of the 9th grade class and currently only data shared to date with parents for 2005/2006 school year is the RHS Small Learning Community Data. -The RHS SLC data does not include the variables researched in the 2005/2006 school year. -2005/2006 DATA translates into 1/3 of the ninth grade class only. -Administration is again road blocked with the IPASS data system to the point that again not until one year later is the data question being addressed. -Attachment includes the PowerPoint shared at Feb. "05" parent meeting. This research was also forwarded to Vernon Board of Ed members at that time. To date no response or action to address proactive means to do on-going data research in relation to student academic performance at RHS. This research could provide objective rationale for parental involvement at various levels, targeted budget items to address student deficiencies, targeted staff development programs to address differentiated instruction strategies for areas students are struggling with. Please email back if you want attachment. -The following memo along with detailed PowerPoint of all data collected in 2/05 was forwarded to Brian Levesque and Eric Jackson in July "05"! Current status of continuing the data from current administration is again the IPASS data system contributes to the difficulty of getting the data needed. The parent group in “04/05” did have success with the data research with the assistance of Mr. Gerritt (past RHS principal) and Mr. Balcome (retired RHS Guidance Director). July 05 To: RHS Administration From: RHS Parent Group Here are the conclusions, questions and ideas that result from the presentation. Please forward these to Mr. Jackson. Hopefully he will energize more people to help address this issue. I think it is possible to make large improvements in failure rates at RHS if action is taken and we continue to measure results. To not take action is a great disappointment...since Feb. 05 Conclusions: . -Earth Science and Math Courses had higher failure rates in Q1 / Q2 Than History and English . -Basic / General Level Classes have much Higher failure rates than Honors / College Level Classes --- "General Level Earth Science had more than 50% failure rate in both Q1, Q2" . Q2 results were generally worse than Q1 from a failure rate standpoint --- more than 1/2 the kids walk out of Q1/Q2 failing! . -In all Departments, boys failed more often than girls, often boys had significantly higher failure rates (even in math and science). . -African American and Hispanic Students generally fail at higher rates than Caucasian and Asian Students. Caucasians (largest group by far) had the most failures in Science and Math. . -Recycle rates add to teacher load, mostly in Math and some in Science . -Lower Income Status Students have lower Scores and higher failure rate. (e.g. 72% versus 45% in General Earth Science) . -Scores do not follow a normal distribution (various issues at play) Must be careful with analysis techniques Especially when comparing averages. Publicizing "average" scores is misleading and will indicate lower than reality (median scores are more appropriate) . -SPED and ELL Status did not seem to impact results Questions: . Does Attendance Impact Scores? . Does Homework Completion Rate Affect Scores? Ideas: 8) Developmental Guidance/Career Cluster discussion - This may be a good topic to include in one of upcoming agendas. Many new initiatives taking place. Guidance Department is not looking for parent involvement for this initiative. 9) 5 hours being added to Karen Regan's position - discussed the 15 hours and the advisory team advocating for the additional 5 to the board of education directly in support of this budget line item. 10) Budget - Mentioned to have updates at final parent meetings on budget process. Brian Levesque is open to sharing the status of the budget during the process with parents. 11) Elderly involvement at RHS - Explore avenues to include the senior center/elderly population in RHS community - tutoring, assistance in classes, create bulleting boards, speakers in the career programs, etc..Kim Marinan and Brian Levesque stated that nothing has been done to date with this partnership. This agenda item surfaced in August 2005 and it was felt at that time that the seniors would have a better understanding of the school issues if they were also a member of our school community. No action at the school level has been taken at this time. 9) Agenda items as follows created for the last four parent meetings: February 6, 2006 - 7:00 - 9:00 PM
. Elementary School Attended versus Scores
. Middle School Attended versus Scores
. Obtain teacher rating of why Student Failed (for further analysis)
. Obtain student rating of why failure occurred (for further analysis)
. Investigate causes of failure in Earth Science and Math Courses
. Better Understand if Students are failing multiple courses
. What Impacts Scores and what can we do about it?
. Consider creating a 60- 69 "D" category option where parents can either accept or require that student re-takes course
. Meet with Middle School Staff to show data and solicit ideas that will better prepare students for Grade 9 Collect data from Teachers when they give a failing grade -- why
. Meet with HS staff to solicit ideas, especially Earth Science and Math . Pre 9th Grade Summer Prep in Science

There is still room for suggestions for agendas that are not complete.
